In 1768 this was transformed into a permanent theatre by the architect Ferdinando Fuga for the wedding of the Bourbon king Ferdinand IV to Maria Carolina of Habsburg. The niches house twelve papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 statues depicting <\/span><b><i>Apollo<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the nine <\/span><b><i>Muses<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the patron deities of the arts, <\/span><b><i>Minerva<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the goddess of wisdom, and <\/span><b><i>Mercury<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the messenger of the Gods. The use of papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 was fitting for a theatrical environment, but also functional for the acoustics of the theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bombing during the Second World damaged the roof and destroyed the eighteenth century decoration of the vault, later repainted in its original style.
