State Apartment

Ambulatory

The large gallery running around the Courtyard of Honour and conceived as a hallway between the rooms of the State Apartments was originally an open loggia. This was divided into several rooms in order to gain more spaces for the court, while the sides facing the courtyard were walled up and fitted with windows. During the nineteenth-century restorations, the architect Gaetano Genovese restored the continuity of the original space which is now flooded with light thanks to the creation of large windows. The ambulatory was then given a new Neoclassical look: the vaults were decorated in stucco based on a design by Genovese himself, with ornamental motifs that are also found in other rooms of the Palace.
