Gardens and Courtyards

From the Hanging Garden, visitors can enjoy a stunning view of the Gulf of Naples, with Mount Vesuvius in the background, extending to the Sorrentine Peninsula and the island of Capri.

Adiacente al Teatro di San Carlo e affacciato su piazza Trieste e Trento, questo piccolo spazio verde recintato fu realizzato alla metà dell’Ottocento nell’ambito dei lavori di restauro diretti dall’architetto Gaetano Genovese in seguito all’abbattimento del Palazzo Vecchio, sede dei viceré spagnoli nel Cinquecento.

Created in the 17th century as a seafront extension of the viceregal palace, the courtyard was renovated in the 19th century and connected to the Hanging Garden by a cast iron bridge, now reconstructed.

The courtyard corresponds to the oldest and most significant part of the royal palace, built for the Spanish viceroys of Naples starting in 1600.

Connected to the Courtyard of Honor, the rectangular courtyard is named after the royal court’s carriage house and now hosts the museum dedicated to Enrico Caruso.
