How to

Visit the restoration laboratory

The restoration laboratory at Palazzo Reale is located on the mezzanine floor, overlooking the Cortile delle Carrozze. This space was originally part of the palace facing the 16th-century garden and was architecturally defined between the second half of the 17th century and the transformation works commissioned by Charles of Bourbon. Recent restorations have uncovered brick walls and piperno window frames from the 17th-century eastern façade, which are no longer visible from the outside as they were incorporated into the current laboratory spaces.

Our restorers take care of both the artworks on display in the museum and those housed in storage, also collaborating with university students and interns specializing in restoration.

The laboratory was established within Palazzo Reale in 2004 in spaces previously used as storage for artworks. The necessary equipment and materials were acquired, while the Superintendency restored and adapted the premises to regulatory standards.

Today, following the expansion and functional reorganization of spaces completed with the latest restoration works in 2018, the restoration laboratory of the Royal Palace of Naples operates at full capacity, ensuring the continuous preservation of the museum’s numerous artworks. The laboratory also provides access to the newly renovated Painting and Frame Storage, equipped with modern sliding racks designed not only for safe storage but also for easy accessibility. In 2018, these fascinating spaces were inaugurated and opened to the public on special occasions during the European Heritage Days, which are periodically repeated during the “Deposits’ Saturdays” openings.
