Fifty years after its debut, Masaniello—true to the first two editions by Armando Pugliese and Elvio Porta—returns to the stage on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at 9:00 PM (with additional performances on May 27, 28, 29 and June 1) in the Cortile d’Onore of the Royal Palace of Naples, offering a powerful and moving insight into one of the most iconic theatrical productions in Neapolitan cultural history.

The choice of the Courtyard of Honour of the Royal Palace is no coincidence: in 1997, Masaniello was performed in this very courtyard, in a staging that abolished the separation between stage and audience, creating an immersive and participatory experience. This new version preserves the original spirit, featuring a set design that evokes the historical era and involving the audience directly, transporting them into the heart of 17th-century Naples.

The play tells the story of the revolt of July 7, 1647, when the people of Naples, exasperated by the taxes imposed by the Spanish viceroy, rose up against the increased price of fruit. Structured in two acts and lasting approximately 85 minutes, the performance stands out for its ability to blend prose, music, and dance into a fully immersive theatrical experience.

Written by Elvio Porta and Armando Pugliese, with direction by Pugliese himself, the production features a prestigious creative team: set design by Bruno Garofalo, costumes by Silvia Polidori, and original music by Maestro Antonio Sinagra. The cast includes more than thirty performers, including actors, musicians, and dancers.
